Do you have any tips on transitioning back into the next short lesson after a break?
I have two lovely high energy boys ages 5 and 6. Luckily they love reading and listening to stories, but it can be hard to reel them back in when they go off on their own adventures. Particularly if we need to practice something like writing letters. I have no issue with them exercising their independent creativity, but I need a better balance.
How does one create a flow back to brief lessons so that the lessons don’t get completely skipped in preference of play?
Hi Blakely! Sorry for the delay in replying to your comment. Transitions can be difficult, for sure. Here's what I found that helps- set a timer. Tell your kids that you are taking a short break for xyz purposes- snack, water, bathroom, etc.- for xyz amount of time. Then set a timer on your phone, microwave, Alexa, whatever method you prefer. When the timer goes off, draw attention to the sound and say that is the end of our break. Now we are going to do whatever the next activity is. It may take some time for them to get used to it, but that is the practice of habit training. You can also tell them that independent play time is coming after we finish whatever things, so that will help them to understand the schedule a little better as well. Be firm about them returning when the signal sounds. You might even want to practice that, too. Hope this helps. Let us know how it goes!
