What the Winner Receives

Chapter I: Heroes and Wonders: Fifty Famous Stories Retold, Æsop’s Fables, and A Child’s Book of Myths & Enchantment Tales.
Chapter II: Warriors and Giants: On the Shores of the Great Sea, In the Days of Giants, and Stories of Beowulf.
Chapter I begins with fables, myths, and historical tales for children ages 5–8. Chapter II widens the world to ancient history, Norse myth, and Beowulf for ages 7–10.
These are not display pieces. They belong beside the sofa, on the breakfast table, and in the untidy stack by a child’s bed. Read them aloud. Put them back on the shelf. Take them down again next year.

The Odyssey begins after a war, but its true subject is home. Odysseus must pass through temptation, pride, loss, and long delay before he can stand again in Ithaca.
It is the kind of story children grow into. At first they remember the Cyclops and the sea monsters. Later they notice Penelope’s faithfulness and the cost of Odysseus’s choices.
